NEW ORIGINAL SONG release October 25!
He Mele no Ka Pāo'o by Greg Juan
The haku mele composed this mele to showcase his Kumuʻs hula stylings, Kumu Hula Chinky Māhoe. Gregory had the idea to write a mele in 2019 and later put it to recording in 2024. Gregory received the inspiration for the mele while dancing with Kumu Chinky when learning some of the world renown hula that had become a staple hula in the hālau. The style of the song is in a story telling format and speaks about the adventure of an adolescent goby fish which is called the Pāoʻo. The Pāoʻo is known to be agile, shiny, curious, and very particular about where he wants to reside. The story begins in Kaukonahua jumping into the punawai and soon makes its way towards Kailua where it ends in Kawainui. If you look closely there are certain areas in this mele that can be pointed about the kolohe Menehune of Wahiawa. The menehune of that area were called the Wā menehune and were known to cause trouble while the Mū menehune of Kailua were industrious. The Pāoʻo usually swim in the low tide pools and hop from one tide pool to the next trying to find the best environment that suits them. As one can depict, this Pāoʻo may resemble a lot of our younger days of being an adolescent testing the waters. Please enjoy this adventure of He Mele no ka Pāoʻo.
